Sodium

Sodium is a mineral that acts as an electrolyte, where it plays a critical role in the body's fluid balance. Sodium works with other electrolytes to maintain blood volume, fluid balance and electrolyte balance. It is a major player in blood pressure regulation, aids in nerve function and works to transport molecules across cell membranes.

Food & Beverage Sources

Almost all foods naturally contain small amounts of sodium, yet over-consumption of sodium is very common largely due to the use of salt to season foods and consumption of sodium-containing processed foods like canned foods, lunch meats and snack foods. Most beverages, including milk, water, most juices and even most soft drinks, contain only low amounts of sodium.

Recommended Intake Levels

Sodium is an essential part of the diet, however most people in developed countries consume far more than they need on a daily basis. Because diets high in sodium intake can increase the risk of high blood pressure (hypertension) in some people, The Institute of Medicine recommends limiting sodium intake to 2.3 grams per day - which is less than half the amount typically consumed by most U.S. adults.
